An Electric Service Identifier (ESID), pronounced “Easy I.D.”, is a unique number tied to your address in Texas. Unlike a meter or account number, your ESID identifies the exact service location and never changes, even if you switch providers.
How Are Texas ESIDs Structured?
Each utility uses different number sequences—for example, Oncor ESIDs start with 1044, while CenterPoint’s usually begin with 10089. This ensures every home or business has its own distinct identifier.
Why is an ESID Important in Texas?

How to Know if you Have an ESID
You have an ESID number if you live in a deregulated, or in a colored area on the map below. If your home or business falls into a grey area, you likely are not in an energy deregulated area. Or if your utility is not one of the ones listed below, you’re likely live in a regulated part of Texas. However, there are some nuances to this. If you live in an area that is serviced by municipally-owned electric utilities and electric cooperatives, you’ll need to contact them directly to see if you have an ESID number.

How to Find Your Utility
If you’re unsure what utility you fall into based on our map, you can enter your address in the tool above to find your ESID number. From there, your utility can be determined by breaking down the numbers into 3 sections.
The prefix, which are the first 2 digits of your number. They will always be 10. The middle set of numbers are known as the Department of Energy TDSP ID. These are the next 5 numbers following the prefix. These determine who your utility provider is. So when you want to know your utility, reference the first 5 numbers following the prefix.

What is Power to Choose and What Does it Mean for my Electric Service Identifier?
Power To Choose is the state-operated website created by public utility information to display electricity rates from energy suppliers in deregulated areas. We commonly recommend leveraging this website if you have a residential meter or small monthly usage for your business. Power To Choose does not have any affect on you ESID.
What Does “Meter Inactive” Mean?
A status of “inactive” means your meter has not yet been set up or the power is not on at the location. This is common when moving to a new home or moving your business to a new location. Contact our team so we can help you get your service set up.
How Do I Find my ESID for my Apartment?
If you live in an apartment, or are purchasing an apartment complex, you may need to contact the current property manager or owner. There could be individual ESIDs, or one single one for the entire complex.
Why Is My ESID Shown as De-Energized?
If your ESID number is displaying as de-energized, it means that the address location is not currently receiving any electricity. This could be due to vacancy, a switch in service providers, or non-payment.
Can Two ESIDs be the Same?
No. Every ESID is unique to a given location, similar to how a social security number is unique to people. This is to avoid confusion and ensure accurate utility billing of usage.
