What Makes Up the U.S. Energy Mix in 2026?

Clean energy production in the U.S. has grown significantly over the years. Renewable energy now accounts for about 25% of U.S. electricity generation in 2026. That is more than double what it was a decade ago. The three major green energy sources contributing to the grid are wind at 11%, solar at 8%, and hydropower at 6%. Together, wind, solar, and hydro outpace both coal and nuclear power when combined. 1. Texas – 171,593.42 GWh

Texas is the undisputed national leader in renewable energy production. Wind and solar accounted for 36% of ERCOT’s electricity demand in the first nine months of 2025. Utility-scale solar has grown at an astonishing rate, with it generating 50% more in 2025 than in 2024. Wind and solar infrastructure have grown from producing 18% to 30% of total state electricity generation since 2019. Texas’s renewable energy production efforts have helped the state balance energy supply and demand. On high-demand days, solar alone has met nearly half of the state’s peak electricity needs.

2. California – 141,669.75 GWh

Renewables accounted for 41.3% of California’s electricity generation in 2024, the highest on record after its 2023 number of 36.9%. This is occurring at the same time as the state’s fossil fuel generation is falling to record lows. California plays a very important role since it accounts for 22.1% of national solar generation. Of the 219.8 GW of renewables expected to be built in the state by 2035, solar accounts for 75.5%. Its solar contributions, along with storage and other green sources, help build a diverse renewable portfolio for California. 

3. Washington – 71,037.37 GWh

Unlike many of the other states in this list, Washington is known for its hydroelectric power resources. Hydroelectric power accounted for 59% of the state’s total electricity net generation in 2024. It typically contributes between one-fourth and one-third of all conventional hydroelectric generation in the nation annually. Nine out of ten of the state’s largest power plants by capacity are hydroelectric, demonstrating its pivotal role in providing this renewable energy source across the nation.

4. Iowa – 46,835.60 GWh

Iowa is known for its strong wind energy production. In 2024, wind turbines generated 63% of the state’s electricity, the highest percentage for any state in the nation. Of the 46,835.60 GWh of renewable energy produced by Iowa, wind alone accounted for 44,306 GWh in 2024. It was only behind Texas in wind power production. Much like Texas, it ranks among the top states in highest electricity sales per capita, making it an important leader in the energy space.  

5. Oklahoma – 40,101.40 GWh

In 2024, Oklahoma ranked third in the nation in wind electricity generation, after Texas and Iowa. This can be attributed to these states having winds that blow across their open plains. 41% of the state’s electricity was supported by wind energy. Wind accounted for 94% of its total green energy generation, thanks to its 5,624 active wind turbines. Despite the state’s focus on wind energy, it ranks sixth in the nation in solar power potential, so it may become an even bigger leader in the renewable energy space in the future.

6. Oregon – 39,999.50 GWh 

Much like Washington, Oregon is known for its hydroelectric power generation. In 2024, it accounted for about 41% of Oregon’s total electricity net generation. The state pairs hydroelectric power with its 15% from wind energy and 6% from other smaller renewable sources, for a total of about 62% of its total electricity. Something to watch out for regarding Oregon’s renewable future is its geothermal energy potential. The state’s geothermal potential is ranked third in the nation, after Nevada and California.  

7. Florida – 34,284.14 GWh

By August 2024, Florida had 9.7 GW of utility-scale solar capacity, accounting for nearly half of the entire U.S. utility-scale solar fleet when paired alongside California and Texas. Solar accounts for about 8% of the state’s existing electricity portfolio, and it’s expected to grow even more. The total proportion of green energy in Florida is expected to reach 28% by 2032. The state is expected to continue to be a national solar leader in the coming years.

8. Illinois – 30,734.00 GWh

Of the 30,734 GWh of renewable energy Illinois generated in 2024, 24,432 GWh of it came from wind energy production. The state generates 16% of its electricity from renewables. State officials have passed various acts to propel the state’s renewable energy future forward. The Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act and the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act support battery storage development and target the state to become 100% powered by renewable energy by 2050.  

9. Kansas – 30,422.30 GWh

In 2024, renewable resources supplied more than half of Kansas’s total state electricity net generation. Most of it came from wind power, but it also included solar, biomass, and hydropower sources. Thanks to its wide plains, it is among the top states in wind power potential. Kansas ranked fourth in total wind-powered generation, behind Texas, Iowa, and Oklahoma in 2024. It continues to grow its renewable and wind-generating capacity, demonstrating its commitment to a greener future.

10. Colorado – 26,544.75 GWh

Colorado’s renewable energy sources accounted for 43% of its total in-state electricity net generation in 2024, a record high. Wind power accounts for much of its renewable energy. Colorado has significant wind energy resources on its eastern plains and mountain crests, helping it rank seventh nationwide in installed wind power generating capacity. The state’s clean energy goals have constantly been met, an example being the state doubling its wind power generation between 2014 and 2024. It has also shown potential for increased solar and geothermal energy generation, making it an exciting state to keep an eye on in the future.
