What is a Smart Grid?

A smart power grid is an electricity network that uses smart technology and two-way digital communication to more efficiently meet power needs. Smart grid systems allow operators to monitor, analyze, manage, and communicate within the energy supply chain to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and improve reliability. An intelligent power grid facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources while modernizing our current energy infrastructure.

How Do Smart Grids Work?

Smart grid technology connects all aspects of our energy infrastructure: from power generation, transmission, and storage to distribution and electricity consumption. Integrating advanced technologies and automation systems throughout each phase of power generation creates smart grid infrastructure.

Smart technology and automation systems take some of the human touch, and error, out of utility energy management. Smart grid software and devices constantly monitor generation, supply, and distribution, responding to local circumstances in real-time. In the event of a power outage or equipment failure, the smart grid automatically alerts operators and redirects electricity using two-way digital communication. This reduces the impact of an outage and the amount of time it takes to restore power.

Two-way communication devices typically take the form of smart meters, which are added at points of power generation and consumer end-users. The control center receives data from all connected smart grid technologies, where data-driven decisions are made about distribution and storage.

What Technologies Contribute to Smart Grid Solutions?

There is a wide variety of technologies that contribute to the smart energy grid. Each device and smart grid solution is designed to integrate quickly and seamlessly with the existing system with “plug and play” functionality. Some technologies are specifically used by utility companies while others empower energy consumers to manage their own energy consumption. Explore the range of smart grid technology and how it contributes to a digital grid below.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is the integration of smart meters, data management systems, and bi-directional communication networks. AMI devices enable utility companies and consumers to share information in real time, improving energy management efforts.

Smart meters monitor the flow of power to-and-from both end-users and energy generators. The bi-directional communication networks and data management systems process this information, providing it to the control center for informed decision-making.

The Internet of Things (IoT)

The internet of things (IoT) is essential to a functional smart grid system. The IoT is the network of sensor-enabled smart devices that connect and share information. It can relate to smart home devices, commercial energy management systems, electric vehicles (EVs), and other energy reporting technologies.

The information shared between these smart devices creates a big data collection for a specific area or community. Smart grids leverage energy usage data within the IoT to more efficiently power homes, businesses, and communities based on real-time needs.

Energy Management Systems (EMS)

Energy management systems (EMS) give energy consumers the power to improve their own efficiency and reduce costs. EMS solutions integrate smart building systems, like lighting, HVAC, and security, into a singular interface for simplified management.

Within the interface, consumers will be able to monitor energy usage in real time, receiving data-driven insights and recommendations for improvement. EMS software gives households and businesses more information and better control over their energy consumption patterns. Energy-conscious consumers are integral to smart grid development and success.

Renewable Energy Generation

One of the key purposes of smart grid development is to integrate distributed energy resources and more renewable energy projects into the grid. Both utility-scale and individual renewable energy generation provide greater grid stability while reducing carbon emissions.

Locally generated renewable energy helps to decentralize the national smart grid system. This practice provides each state, city, or township with more power over the type of electricity they generate and consume. Renewable energy projects can be customized to specific community needs, creating a stronger, more climate-resistant smart grid system.

Demand Response Programs

Demand response programs are typically offered by utility companies to help manage power supply during peak periods of energy demand. They are a new and developing energy management strategy that incentivizes commercial and industrial customers to shed their electrical load during specific periods of time.

When businesses and manufacturers adjust energy-intensive operations to off-peak periods, it reduces the strain on the grid and power supply. Furthermore, it promotes greater energy security and reliability. Utility companies and energy suppliers benefit from lower demands while commercial and industrial customers benefit from lower off-peak energy rates.

Energy Storage Facilities

Energy storage facilities transform intermittent renewable energy sources, like solar and wind, into reliable, stable power. Investing in energy storage projects is an important step in modernizing the electrical grid and reducing emissions. Utility companies will reserve excess generated electricity at these facilities, distributing it during periods of peak demand or low energy supply.

Many industries already incorporate energy storage into their back-up power systems or microgrids. Essential services, such as hospitals, public safety institutions, and data centers already have this technology deployed on a small scale. However, creating utility-scale energy storage is a vital tool in reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.

EV Charging Stations

The electrification of transportation is an important initiative in the pursuit of a clean energy future. Incorporating EV charging stations into the electrical grid provides more accessibility and encourages greater EV adoption. Cities investing in smart electric grids need to consider growth and future power demands.

As more citizens invest in electric modes of transportation, EV charging stations become essential infrastructure. Furthermore, chargers with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies can transform plugged in vehicles into temporary energy storage, providing even greater grid reliability. Many cities and school districts across the U.S. have invested in electric public transportation. Imagine the additional energy storage possibilities that a fleet of electric buses could provide.

What Are the Benefits of Smart Grid Technology?

Ensuring an Equitable Investment

Similar to infrastructural challenges, less wealthy communities are often left behind in technological advancements. Ensuring that smart grid technology and access is distributed to every community is essential.

Case Study: Smart Grid Development in Northern Georgia

In 2013, Georgia’s electric cooperative utility, Habersham EMC (HEMC), began developing a smart grid system. HEMC partnered with three companies to pilot an innovative energy management system (EMS). This system uses customers’ broadband networks to access energy usage data from connected appliances like HVAC systems and water heaters. This data helped identify consumption patterns and peak demand periods, so HEMC could more effectively manage it.

The pilot project gave customers access to their energy data via a smartphone app. At the same time, HEMC launched a smart thermostat and home energy management program to encourage participation.  More than 2,000 residents within a 260-mile radius enrolled. The HEMC pilot program prioritized smaller communities that otherwise couldn’t afford such an investment.

The success of the pilot led to an expansion program in 2017. The initial smart grid pilot program was funded by a $616k USDA grant. However, the expansion aims to provide smart grid solutions to surrounding communities without using federal or state grants.
