The History of Earth Day

Earth Day was founded by former Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson. Senator Nelson was a well-known environmentalist who was deeply affected by the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. The devastating pollution from the spill struck a chord with Senator Nelson and millions of Americans. With the aim of starting a grassroots environmentalist movement, Nelson proposed a national Earth Day to promote environmental awareness and action.

On April 22, 1970, more than 20 million Americans participated in rallies, marches, and educational programs with a focus on environmental issues and reducing pollution. The national outcry of environmental support led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and worldwide recognition of Earth Day.

When is Earth Day celebrated?

Following the demonstrations and rallies of 1970, Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd. While it started as an American grassroots movement, Earth Day has grown into the largest secular holiday in the world.

Furthermore, green energy sources don’t require dangerous mining for finite resources. Instead, natural sunlight and wind currents generate power.

The act of generating renewable power is also much safer for the environment than fossil fuels. Fossil fuels must be processed and combusted to create usable power. This process emits harmful carbon dioxide emissions which lead to climate change, extreme weather conditions, health risks, and species loss. Switching to green energy sources significantly reduces this pollution, contributing to a healthier and safer environment.

Nationwide Sustainability Initiatives

One of the most essential methods to reach this ambitious goal is bolstering the United States’ renewable power capacity. The United States aims to triple our renewable energy capacity by 2030. Fortunately, our country is making great progress. 2023 was a record-breaking year for renewable energy deployment. The U.S. installed a record-breaking 31 gigawatts of solar energy capacity, a 55% increase from 2022. Utility-scale battery storage also had a record-breaking year while wind energy capacity continues to grow steadily. It’s projected that solar and wind will continue to lead renewable energy growth for the next few years. Solar capacity is projected to grow by an impressive 75% by 2025, underscoring the country’s dedication to a clean energy future.

What States Produce The Most Green Energy?

The top solar power producing states are in the sunny South, which benefits from long, warm summers. On the other hand, top wind power producing states are condensed along the central wind belt, also called Tornado Alley. These regions of the country have ideal climates with consistent wind and sunlight.

Fortunately, green energy production is soaring! In 2023, the Federal Government invested an incredible $303.3 billion towards clean energy technologies throughout the country. In the past year alone, 42 Gigawatts of renewable power-generating capacity was added to the U.S. grid. Due to robust federal funding, solar and wind power is expected to grow exponentially over the next few years. Below, we detail the stand-out states for both solar and wind power production.  

Top Solar Energy Producing States

California tops the charts for 2023 solar power generation with a remarkable 68,816 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar power generated. That’s enough energy to power 6.2 million American households for an entire year! Texas comes in second with 31,739 GWh of capacity followed by Florida (17,809 GWh), North Carolina (12,085 GWh), and Arizona (11,778 GWh). As solar technologies become less expensive, it’s likely we’ll see increasing competition among Southern and coastal states.

Top Wind Energy Producing States

Texas is the undisputed leader in wind energy, generating an astounding 119,836 GWh of wind power. That’s more than enough energy to power 10.8 American households for an entire year! Putting this in perspective, Texas’ wind power surpasses the second, third, and fourth top states combined. Coming in second is Iowa with 41,869 GWh of capacity followed by Oklahoma (37,731 GWh), Kansas (27,462 GWh), and Illinois (22,054 GWh). Central states within Tornado Alley have a tremendous amount of wind power potential.
